I found an unusual Holden a few days ago, made me think of a little trivia question.

See if you can name the Models in HQ-HZ where you could option an M21 transmission (the 2.54:1 Aussie 4spd box). There aren't as many as you'd think. I'll add the number up later and give you a total to work to.

There were 10 models in HQ.
7 models in HJ.
6 models in HX.
4 models in HZ.

Yes. The following all came standard with L32 (253) and M15 (3spd manual) except for V8 GTS which had M20 standard. M20 and M21 were both optional except V8 GTS. That sorts out the 10 HQ models.

Sedans:
80269
80469
81269
81669

Wagons:
80235
80435
81235

Coupes:
80437
80837
81237

No. The only transmissions ever actually optional on any Sandman special vehicle package between HQ and HZ were M22, M40 and M41. M21 was never optional, it only ever came with an engine option.

HQ 173, 202 and 253 all came with 3 speed manual on the tree.

308 Came with M 21 4speed manual on the floor. unless it was a Statesman then it got auto or Ambulance pack auto.

HZ with 5.0L M21, could be optioned Kingswood SL sedan and wagon, Premier sedan and wagon, Sandman p van and ute and Ute and P van and GTS. That's 9.

HX with M21 add Belmont. That's 10.

HJ Kingswood Sandman ute. That's 11.

HQ add Statesman and De Ville. and Belmont Sandman ute and P van That's 15.

Yes, 308 came with M21, you didn't option M21. It was the standard gearbox and you could pay more for auto. HQ V8 Statesman was the same, it was standard with 253 3spd, you could option 308 and it came with M21.

You did get one of the HZ's though but all the rest are wrong. HZ Premier was standard with auto and if you optioned 5.0L you got M41. However HZ Premier sedan could be optioned with M21 if you wanted. So that is one of the HZ's I mentioned.

my first GMH co car was a HZ Prem wagon .. 5.0 with M21 manual box, not M41 auto in that very common metallic blue (Atlantis Blue?)
(also had the sports dash, power everything too.. should of kept that)

According to the POA and Engineering Technical Specs that was a special build. They only list M21 as an option in HZ Premier sedan, either behind 4.2L or 5.0L.

M21 behind 253, was that available throu the models?

What about M20 behind 308? Drove a few & thought it was a better match.

When driving M21s I usually went 1 - 2 - 4 or 1 - 3 - 4

Yes, 243/4.2 and M21 are the bulk of those numbers I listed above. All of the HQ's listed in the 4th post are cars where M21 was an option behind 253. The only car in HZ where M21 was optional behind a 5.0L was the HZ Premier sedan as mentioned in post 7.

The Aussie M20 code was never optional behind 308. The only manual transmissions ever fitted behind 308 in HT to HZ were the Saginaw coded here as M21, and the Aussie 4spd M21. There was an optional ratio set available in LH SLR5000 optioned with the L34 engine, but only top gear differed (ie 1x2.78 vs 1x3.08). There was a Borg Warner T10 listed as optional for the LX A9X but none were ever fitted on the assembly line, it was a simple homologation exercise. M20 Aussie 4spd as effectively homologated for LH and LX in GroupC as well, by virtue of the base homologation for them was the LH SL/R which came standard with 202 and M20. SO they could have run it if they liked, but again no road cars would ever have been fitted with one.

Both the Saginaw and the HQ Muncie that we saw in HK to HQ here were all actually coded as M20 in the USA and Canada.

quite possible! I don't recall the 'how' that occurs .. but back then ( I was a newbie when it came to cars being offered to employees ) you went to
the 'employee' car group (part of payroll/HR dept) and were shown a large (A3 as I recall) piece of paper with all available model lines listed
(Holden, Torana, Chev, Gemini etc) and a list of all models in each ... with engines, interiors, colours etc and it was just a 'the the box' exercise
what do you want?
Rear disc brakes? yep tick the box. Rear tailgate power window? tick the box. Sports Instruments?.. tick the box. C60? again tick the box.
a colour chart was waved under your nose, you picked one and the code was written on the page.. ditto with interiors

Then Commodore arrived and it stayed the same until the Holden and Torana car lines were killed off .. and this was computerized (probably because control of the entire
car fleet - press test, engineering evaluation, directors cars etc) had been computerized on an EzyTrieve database ( I was one of the user guinea pigs asked to test it).
You sat with a HR person while they typed in the details off selection tables on the screen. Depending on your employment grade (seniority level)the HR person could make some intersting choices

so ... I did get a few 'specials' thru that. a VB 8VX69 SL/e 5.0 + M21 + G70 2.6 diff ( With 15" wheels it did over the state speed limit in 1st !) and a very early VC L wagon.. with one of the first 'blue' XT5 308 engines
+ M21 (HD 'large' diff and JM8 compulsory with that) plus N10 and C60. Very quick car that...a bit of a sleeper
