Hello all.
Notice on my VB SL/E, the two chrome strips per door trim, the chrome look is coming off. Its made me think, plenty of other Holden's had these plastic chrome strips on there door trims, like to know how it was done.
I know you can't remove the strips, part of the vinyl. I believe they are plastic welded to the vinyl. So i sorta can't get mine looking like chrome anymore. |

You are right, plenty of Holdens had it - GMH's supplier used the same process on Commodore as they had on Holden and Torana and Gemini. They probably used it on Ford and Chrysler product too. I've seen it done with chrome pinstripe but it comes off after a while. My advice would be to pull the trims off and keep them safe and flat, if you can get repros in the right colour. One of the ways to look after them is find some rusty doors and cut the inner frame out, and just stick the trims on like they are meant to. Unfortunately so many of these would have been trashed by 1985 there won't be any good trim left, VB V8 SLE's were wrecked left right and centre in the 80's for their V8 drivelines especially the 5.0L cars, good cars with shopping centre car park damage or cigarette burns on the seats were $1000 in the mid 80's and I used to see them piled 3 high on the scrap trucks off to the scrap yard, often the bulk of the trim would all still be in them, just the bonnet and guards, driveline, headlights, tail-lights, dash cluster and sometimes the front seats removed. Same thing happened to WB Statesmans except the front doors would be off them too. Large amounts were stolen and burnt out too. There can't be too many left today, you are actually lucky to have one! |

Damo the Commodore door cards (and probably Holden and Torries too but I have never seen them made) are produced in a big heated mould press the chrome strips, carpet(if fitted like a SL/e) are heat pressed in place when the vinyl is placed on the card and heated up. Note the edges are not... they are manually folded over and glued/stapled re a fix for the chrome strips, the only one I have seen that is half Ok... I know of an instance where a motor trimmer cut out the old and plastic welded in the chrome window mylar trim (yeah, the stuff around your front and rear windscreens) HTH |
