How can one tell if a WB master cylinder is suited to a disc/drum set up or disc/disc set up ?
Have inherited a complete WB cylinder and matching booster with my project HZ ute and am liking the idea of the inbuilt proportioning valve, running standard front discs, standard rear drums. Got the right pedal.
From the WB inbuilt proportioning valve I have the two smaller outlets from the bigger front reservoir (front circuit I assume) and a larger single outlet from the smaller back reservoir (rear circuit?)
From what I can gather pretty much straight fit up into my HZ with some piping alterations to accommodate metric and positioning and I'm away, don't need any remote proportioning valve as a standard HZ would normally have ?
Just wanting to confirm disc/drum application is ok and what differences within master cylinder are for disc/drum to disc/disc?
Cheers for any help

The number on it will tell you which it is. Rear drum outlet will have a brass fitting in it. However unless it has been used recently it is unlikely to be any good without a rebuild anyway.

Yeh will need a tidy up if it turns out to be usable.
Has the big cast 'PBR' and '1" on the top.
Only numbers I can see are "2JI" stamped in the end, "110A' up near where it mounts to the booster, and a "7" cast underneath the cylinder.
As far as inserts, there is what looks a like a liner or sleeve in the rear out port, tapered in and sitting right at the bottom of the hole, same as the front out ports but just a little bigger in its diameter ?
Cheers

That sounds like an original from later 1981. I doubt it'd be much good anymore, at least will require a rebuild and I think these have plated bores so will probably need a stainless sleeve put in. Dr Terry might have an idea.

What does the booster look like? A HQ-HZ disc/drum type in size or a little fat one? That thing you are describing in the rear brake circuit port sound like the drum brake valve that isn't there on those cylinders if used in disc/disc applications.

I'm pretty sure I have the disc/disc scenario, booster is the conventional shape bigger one, have managed to add a couple of photos to my album for reference,
Cheers for the info all

I can't see from the booster image what it is. Is it the same size as a HQ-HZ disc/drum type?

That's a drum brake booster by the looks. You can see a WB disc/disc booster on this Ebay page:

https://www.ebay.com.au/...6e5f:g:SVQAAOSwZwRfTfQG

Both look like they need a rebuild to me. Booster are about $400. Master cylinder may not be rebuildable but you can buy a new one for about $400.

Yeh OK, definitely got the skinny version booster, not the fatter/deeper one. Hadn't taken any notice on them until now, only looked at the diameter I guess. Appears the drum version has a recessed front mounting shape where the cylinder bolts on and the disc version has a protruding flat type face, guessing to accommodate the depth too?
Reckon I'll now look at the VT booster/cylinder conversion as opposed to the $ associated with the original bits at those prices, gotta re plumb the lines anyway.
Any guidance on good or bad there on the VT set up ?
Cheers for all your knowledge and comments

I am using a VT/VX/V2 etc cylinder on my HK as I am also using BA front calipers with the HQ-WB rear drums so I needed the larger bore cylinder for the calipers. However I got a HG booster rebuilt for it which cost about $380 for the full rebuild, and a Harrop adapter so the cylinder fits to the booster. I'm not sure that a VT booster would give you any huge advantage over the original WB one and most would be ready for a rebuild by now anyway as they are all over 20 years old. I'm pretty sure the double diaphragm booster I put on my Hilux as an upgrade was from a VX or V2 though, and it can give too much boost compared to the original - it can easily lock the fronts and they are huge tyres compared to a HZ (265/65/17), and also way bigger rotors (328mm).

Yeh Ok, are all VT-VY boosters double diaphragm ala the one you put on ya Hilux?
I've seen some using VT booster and cylinder and adding a conversion mount on the firewall, I'm thinking I'm more of a chance to find a complete working VT set up than a WB one now without breaking the bank on day one. I do now think I will also run some form up upgrade to the fronts as well so VT booster/cylinder set up sounds like the go.
Once again, Cheers for info
