I am in the process of making new door cards for my HQ ute. The cards I had were not originals and in poor condition. I have new inner seals. The old ones were riveted in place. The vinyl from the door card ran between the metal trim tops and the seal.

Are rivets the correct fasteners or was a different method used from the factory? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Originals were stapled, I think, with heavy duty staples. These were very low profile.

You can replace them with rivets but check the placement of the rivets. If you put the rivets in the wrong place the card won't slip over the door. Because the top of the door isn't straight there are gaps where the rivets will fit down onto the door. In other places the card is hard up against the door and there is no room for the rivet.

GMH used staples to affix the inner belt strips to the metal trim tops.
Rivets are a common and simple alternative to getting your hands on an air stapler and suitable size staples to punch through the belt strip and the metal trim top.

From memory the metal tops were also stapled to the trim board.
