In that case they may have made some rear axles ready for GTS and GTS327 release and realised using the tab and banjo hose was not going to work with dual exhaust and/or radius rods (aka GTS327) so just left the bracket there. That is starting to be too many still around indicating lots more sold than just for upgrades!
I’ll check the few diffs I still have. One is ex GTS327, the other off a HG GTS350.

Yes, you may be right, there are definitely too many around for it to be an option! when I remove the diff I'll try and put some photos up. I assume you put photo`s on this site?

Yes, put them in an album and then share in the post from the album.

The early Monaros came with a Salisbury diff and no hump in the boot. This was a factory option at the time and was quite popular with buyers. Your car looks to be in its original condition, which is great! Salisbury diffs are very reliable and durable, so you shouldn't have any trouble with them. Enjoy your car! Also, I found an rx7 for sale, and I've read there that it also has no hump in the boot. And I feel like I discovered America nowadays, LOL. The price is pretty interesting, and now I am considering buying it.

Yeah right, where'd you dig that bullshit from! Early production Monaros were all banjos, there were no Salisbury rear axles until GTS and GTS327 production started a few weeks later. The Salisbury rear axle wasn't an option in most of HK, it either came standard with the 307 manual powertrain in any HK model (other than Brougham or GTS327) or it was standard fitment to GTS327. A Salisbury rear axle ALWAYS had a floor and fuel tank hump. There were a few applications where a 3.36 Salisbury was optional and that was as a second performance option behind 307 and auto in all HK models (except Brougham, GTS and GTS327) - the standard rear axle in these was 2.78 banjo with 3.08 banjo as the first performance option and then 3.36 salisbury as the second performance option, and this was only because the 3.36 banjo was way too weak for fitment behind a V8. Any diff option is super rare in any Holden, primarily as the bulk of cars were not ordered, they were built by GMH for sale. It was extremely rare to have a car built to Retail or Dealer order, and even rarer to have that car optioned with an alternate rear axle. So to say that the salisbury was a popular option is just plain garbage - probably 99% or even higher of cars fitted with one came standard and that was GTS327, V8 GTS or any V8 manual HK.
