Hi all,
Quick question - what is the difference between JL blocks and VL blocks??? Is this an identifier relating to injected v's carby engines? If so, what would the difference between these two blocks be? Or is it to do with the size of vehicle it came out in, ie. vk or HZ 1 tonner etc???
Thanks guys

The L means high comp 202, and the prefix is the vehicle it was fitted to (or originated from). VL is a bit of a special as it covers carbied red, black and blue Commodore 202's. JL is the LJ GTR (non XU-1) engine. Rest are: QL (HQ-early HZ), some LX.

Hi Guys.
Just to add to what Byron has posted. The JL also suits normal LJ S & SL 202s not just GTRs.
Also you will notice that the VL prefix covers Commodore 202s from VB to VK, so that means both Red & Blue motor types.
The other prefix that I' |

Terry, Byron has hinted at it, but as well as red & blue 202s, the black carby was also prefixed VL, so that's all 3 colours! Edited by user Thursday, 23 June 2005 6:09:21 AM(UTC)

Hi Mick.
True, but I count Black motors as being Blue for simplicity sake.

I thought that only LJ GTRs has a 202, ie JL or JP.

I'd say the engine in your VK is most likely a blue motor painted black. |

Byron,
Was it supoposed to be all black 6s like that? Reason I ask is my old man has an original '85 VK carby 6, and it's machined as well.
Maybe it was only the EFI ones not machined? Although I think John's was an EFI block to start with.

I've never seen a original VK (VL or VK prefix) block that had a machined engine number pad, and I've pulled heaps apart over the years. But I haven't visually inspected every black motor built so it's very possible that the early ones were machined. The |

Hi Guys.
Byron, re the LJ GTR 202 thing.
When LJs were first released, the 2250 was the standard issue 6 cyl motor with the 2850 as a option. The single carby 202 (JL block) was unique to the GTR at that stage.
In early '73, when the amber front |

The black motor was the one that I used for bits for my EFI conversion in the HQ I stripped the block down and threw it out it was really badly worn in the bores so I assume it was original. I bought the whole car, but now I think about it the guy was sup

Hi Guys.
To my knowledge, no 2250 Toranas were sold new in Australia after Feb '73, this includes LH. I could be corrected on this point.
2250 were still sold in NZ & other export counties after this date.
I have several LH style 2250 badges in |

Hi guys, been off travelling the Kimberley in WA and then driving from Perth to Melbourne and getting set up over here, so I have been absent for a while and am only just catching up with Fastlane ATM...
Anyway, just to confirm Dr Terry's point above,
