hi ppl. i been pulling out my hair on getting my fuel gauge
reading right. it worked fine in REVERSE so i took it out and
got a new one from rear spares so its reads correct not bakwards.
Easy fix i thought take old one out put new 1 in.

Now when full its reads 3/4 and once my tank its about half full
its reads empty. ???

an auto elec quickly tested both gauge and sender
and said both work fine but when i put sender in the tank i
get these problems.

The wire that plugs onto my sender has only 5 volts going threw it on 1/4 tank
and my gauge reads empty?????

can any one please HELP me. im going crazy and with work i
cant afford to leave me car at an auto elec

Does the HQ have a voltage reg for the instruments?

The symptoms you describe mirror exactly what happens in a VB-VK commodore when the voltage reg fails (bot temp & fuel are affected).
Cheers,

I had the same thing with my HQ. There are 3-4 types of guages and 3-4 types of senders. the problem is getting a sender that matches the guage. Your best bet is to send in your sender to Rare Spares and get them to match a guage to it. They can either

I don't think there were 3 or 4, as far as I know the Q changed from mechanical to hydraulic type gauge in about mid 73, I think you can pick the different types by the colour of the needle the early type had a dark red needle the late type was a a more o

I just had a look at a fuel gauge in the shed it has a large silver rectangular thingy on the back I assume that is the resistor.
The needle is the orangey red colour.
