G’day All,

Firstly this is just a question to satisfy my curiosity, sadly I don’t have the car any longer.

I’ve seen in a few books representations of paint colour codes. They all seem to note which colour roof - usually white - go with each body colour. They also note that there is no colour available for a white car. Yet, I have seen a few.

Between my father and I we owned a 69 HT Kingswood for about 12 years which was white with a gold roof, and the gold interior trim. It had the factory brightwork dividing the body colour and roof colours.

Did in fact the factory paint up a few white cars with a coloured roof? Or is it more likely that the selling dealership would have done it? One point that may indicate… something… is that the roof colours stopped at the top of the front pillars, it did not continue down the front pillars as is sometimes seen. That is, the front pillars were also white.

I have seen one other, in a street machine web post, another way in the distance in a car show you tube and personally a Torana and a HQ in the same format, gold over white. So they aren’t exactly falling from the trees.

I’d love to find out, even if it is just a probability thing.

Geoff

Most dark colour over white body cars were painted by the dealership with genuine mouldings fitted. There were a few special order fleet colour combination available, but not too many appear on my lists.

The only way to tell if it's a factory 2-tone paint job is to check the build plate on the firewall. The first part of the 'TRIM' number is the GMH code for that particular paint combination & each combination has its own identifying number. The other way of course, is that it will have the 2 separate paint numbers on that same plate, one for Kashmir White under'PAINT' & the second (darker) colour listed under 'TOP'.

I’m with Dr Terry. Only thing I’ve ever seen on a Holden or Statesman or Torana or Commodore before the shadow tone VH’s was white roofs or vinyl roofs. The exception being the HX 50th Anniversary cars.
I used to own a Pagewood built ‘57 Chevy. It was Shannon green but Stacks painted the roof and the side infills in a dark green which I suspect was the same green used with Shannon Green on FC.

Dark over light colour schemes were commonplace in FX/FJ days. White wasn't a thing back then, but dark green over light green or dark blue over light blue were available factory combinations. However by FC days the opposite was more trendy.

The only common dark colour over white body factory combinations that I know of were for HQ Vacationers.

It’s kind of a shame, it really looked good as a combination. It also had the bonnet spear as was common in those days. It was the family car from about 71/72 through to 80 when I bought it. Dad broke his trade every 2 or 3 years habit for this car as it was so nice. He kept it for about 8 years.

It looked just like this one.

I’ll put a link rather than just pinching the photo.
I hope that’s ok?
