I have a wb 5litre ute with a m21 gearbox
The other day I’ve gone to select reverse but did quite have the clutch engage
There was a gear grind noise. Is this something I should be concerned about, what damage could/ would be done?

Holden M20/M21 (and also M15 3 speeds) do not have synchromesh in their reverse gear set ups

so if you did not have the clutch fully depressed , then things inside the box will still be rotating when the clutch is partially pushed in
1st to 4th handle that rotation (via syncro rings) and you don't get gear clash.

You DID get gear clash of the reverse cluster by not pushing the clutch in all the way (or making sure the car is absolutely stationery)

ps.. just a tip, when was the last time the clutch cable/clutch clearance was checked?
things wear and cables stretch

Cable hasn’t been checked in a while. But would the gearbox be damaged?
