Hey folks!

Need some advice - I need to remove an LPG tank from a HZ van. It is mounted up underneath the rear of the tray. I'm sure you guys have seen this setup before. I have tried to remove it once before, and was told to turn off every valve I could find, and then it would be safe to undo the hoses. I could only find one at the tank, so I turned it off (or I thought I did!) and went to remove some hoses and gas started leaking out! Well, I could have built myself a lovely garage with the bricks I laid in sheer panic!

I then decided to leave it to a professional. I rang the CFA, the Melbourne Metro Fire Dept., and local LPG fitters, and none of them would come out and empty the tank for me. I've found places that will decant the tank once I get it out and take it to them, but no one that will do it on-site. The tank is three-quarters full, and I want to remove it, empty it and put it aside to put in another van I have.

I had one thought (yes, just one!), that maybe I should loosen off a hose until the gas starts to leak out and then turn the valve and find out which way is really OFF!

Also, unbolting the tank and lowering it to the ground safely worries me! Any handy hints, please, please, please? I don't wanna just unbolt it and watch it fall!

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance,

Hairy-Dude.

Sorry folks, I forgot to mention that the car no longer runs - I've already taken off the head, manifolds etc....I should have let it idle till it was empty when I had it all in one piece. We live and learn....

Cheers,

Hairy-Dude.

Hello Mr Hairy Pooch,
I purchased a HQ van for parts to sell once and it had a gas system on it. The tank was fastened by 4 bolts attached to a cradle that hanged under the floor with 2 x flat bar support areas on top of the floor. Does the tank still ha

it is best to leave the car running close the valve and after a few minutes it will have used the gas in the line and the car will stall however with your car not running loosen the hose at the front of the car gas side of lock off solenoide in a well ven

Hi Hairy, the gas that is comng out is whats left in the piping that goes ot the engine bay the tap on the tank will turn off in a clockwise direction and their will be a fair bit of gas still left in the system. When you do this make sure their are no wa

Yep just gas in the line if the lock off is working. In panel shop we just start engine then turn tap off until motor stops. The filler line in, we take the filler cap off and there is a phillips head screw you can see. Put a phillips screwdriver in the h

Thank you all for your replies, much appreciated! I've managed to turn off the tap and remove the fuel line and filler pipe from the tank. All I have to do is drop the tank! I'm thinking I may hook it up to the BBQ to burn off some of the gas, but this wo

Vent it to air. Will cure neighbour of his smoking habit sharpish. Would also cure garage of its roof habit.

Using the remaining gas in a barbeque is not a bad idea at all.
I've also thought of this and afaik auto gas is cheaper than filling the barby bottle at a service station.
A mate of mine has a gas stove in his house (all other appliances are electric),

The only problem with useing gas from your car for the barbie is the stuff they put in it to make it smell to our sences. I believe that gas bottle gas doesn't have this same addative. So the old steak might taste a bit funny.

Cheers Dutchy.

AFAIK, both types of gas have the same aromatic additive.

What auto gas has that BBQ gas doesn't is butane.

Anybody know the conversion for litres to Kg's for LPG? i.e. how many litres are in a 9kg gas bottle?

Cheers...Dave
