g'day guys, Need help with my twin barrel stromy setup on my holden HT red 186. I am having alot of problems with poor acceleration and rough running. I can't seem to get the timing right even though i have had the auto electricians in and they cant fault it. Have taken car to carby bloke in melb, which made it slightly better but still fairly ords. The engine which i got from wreckers has a suspected mild cam and yella terra head and what ever else that i cant see. The twins are off a 253 auto according to the part number, but have been rejetted to 55". i know this is slightly large but since the carby was from a wreckers, i have gone with it. the power valve has been looked at and increased size put in to help with poor accerleration, didnt work. have had it stripped and put back together but no help. Can i make this carby work?? I am startin to lose faith here. Can fitting the wrong exhaust system to the car make the different (backpressure)????? does the car need a different fuel pump other than the standard glass bowl type??? does it need a sports filter instead of norm?? will a different dizzy do the trick??? any ideas would be greatly apprieciated, this engine is costing alot of time and money just from this problem alone. cheers guys, James

I had the same drama with my timing (electronic dizzy), i dont know if you've got an electric or not, but if you do by chance, get someone qualified to inspect the bushes inside your dizzy.... Fixed my problem quick fast!!
In relation to your carby,

Do you have another carby you can bolt on and give a try.
It may be worth the effort.

thanks for the info guys, a few other details i missed out. The 186 has the standard dizzy (non electronic), there is no black smoke that i have noticed on acceleration, the fuel mixture was checked by machine and ok, even with those size jets. Have

Sounds like its running lean then man!! Give it some more fuel and take your ignition timing to 8degrees and see how you go!! What fuel are you using?? You'll find that using flashlube and regular unleaded will be more user friendly than premium (im us

Let me get this right. You are running 2x WW Stromberg carbs on a 186. With 55 mains ! A 55 main is huge and you have 4 of them ! What idle jets are you running ? I hope #69 or smaller as #69 are big for a 253. Also the power valve thing in the centre, wh

so what about the exhuast?? can the wrong exhaust have a major problem with the running of the engine?? Is it easy to mistaken carby problems for exhaust?? and what is this idea about advance 8 degrees?? below or above tdc??

Hi Jimbob,
What size exh pipes do you have ? Standard exhaust manifold or extractors ? What size pipes either way ? If you are running extractors and 3" pipe you may have a back pressure problem - low down.
I cant see fuel pump being an issue.

Note: FORMERLY KeithUC202 speaking here!!
In regards to the ignition timing, its not advised to run after top dead centre!! I find with a larger carby on my motor, running at 8degrees before top dead was the optimum timing. 6degrees would be what i r

if your problem is carby related try lapping it. ive just built an X2 carby setup (abit diffrent from the twin barrel) but ive learnt that when people rebuild there carbies they tend to tighten them to much which can warp them (mine where shocking) this

Might pay to get car on a dyno and see what your fuel system is actually doing rather than guessing,
if it ain't broke we can improve it.
Cheers Steve
