I have recently had given to me a HD drum brake front end, What I wanted was a HR Disc brake front end, my question is this, what (if any) can I use off the HD front end to make up a disc brake one?? suspension main crossmember etc
The front end will be going into an early Holden (FC) so I knoe I have to re-locate the mounts and outrigger, but should I throw it away and look for HR or is it ok to start with and build from there??

As far as I know, HD and HR front ends are the same. Disc and drum use different stubs, but I think you can use HK-HG stubs, discs and calipers using the HD/HR steering arms. Lay it all out and check that it all looks like it will fit. By using HK-HG disc

I have an extremely informative article regarding this subject as found in the Feb05 edition ot "Australian Street Rodding".
It deals with combining HR front ends with HK stubs and outlines many of the steering geometry issues that can occur especially i

I fitted the HR front end to my EH wagon and used HK disks etc with HT or HG wheels (HK ones have a different offset and rub on the body at the rear and I believe interfere at the front as well.
I used a balance proportioning valve at the rear to stop th

I think HK-HG rear drums bolt straight on, which you might as well use if you are going to fit 14" wheels and HK-HG front brakes. If you go this route make sure you get HG front brakes as the discs are 1/8" thicker than the HK and (not Bathurst) HT. DBA s

Not quite right Les, HD and HR use the same crossmember it's just that the kingpin HD had different control arms to the balljoint HR setups. So you can use the crossmember, just need the correct balljoint style control arms as fitted to late HD and all H

I believe you are incorrect in that the cross members are different the upper control arm pivot on the HD goes through the shocker tower and on the HR it goes behind the shocker tower. The part number for HD is 7427593 and for HR the part number is

Hi Guys.

Both of you guys are half correct.

There are 2 completely different types of HD front suspension crossmember.

The early one, from start of production to the end of June '65 is basically the same as an EJ/EH one with the engine mounts mov

You are correct there was a king pin x member and a ball joint x member, I assumed we were talking king pin vs ball joint and I know what happens when you assume

EKman,

If u have good rims, check if they'll fit with ur Calipers.
I know u can fit Torana Stubs/Calipers to the HD/HR Control arms to keep 13" Rims, but sus whatever combination u want to use B4 you start buying stuff.

That was my next question, I am unsure as what discs to run, HR or Torrie, as I want to maintain the 13" rims and HR stud pattern?
Then I can track down the gear I need to convert the front end to discs!

Torana discs and calipers will push the track out slightly and may rub your wheels on the guards, so do some measurements first!
