Hi all,
I'm telling this after reading "new motor 179" were Sandman and JP expressed opinions on Oil-pressure.
From my experience, the only thing "High" oil pressure will do is pump up hydraulic lifters.
The the most significant test was on an original KB Laser Turbo we had in the family for 8 Years.
My brother bought it 2nd H and always used Mobil One Oil. He had had the car for 3yrs before we drove it from Sydney to Maitland (@500km ret) loaded for a weekend stay and wedding. He mentioned an occasional strange noise occuring B4 we left.
Halfway there it made the noise (like blowing compressed air into a bearing). I suspected the Turbo, so pulled intake hose back, checked the Spindle but nothing wrong, checked the Oil light which "appeard" to function properly so we kept driving.
The noise ocurred about 5 times on the way up.
After weekend stay and Halfway back all of a sudden "no power". The Turbo Shat itself, Bearing failure. A Day later went back to refit the old Turbo housing - I removed Spindle and Brazed the dividing In/Ex chambers closed.
We drove the car back (with a few less HP) and my Bro drove it for another week B4 I saw it again.
Next time he came over I heard the tappets where a bit noisy. Being a simple job I lifted the Rocker cover only to find a "Dry Camshaft". The Timing Chain was Splashing a bit at the Front, but nothing at the Bearings or Lobes.
I dropped the sump only to find a "Huge Split" throught the Oil Pump.
The "Oil sender wire" Firewall to Motor had fallen off un-noticed. (It could have been off 4 a week B4 doin the big trip).
Amazingly all of the Big end Bearings were "NOT DAMAGED OR DISCOLORED" so I left them in, even Cam Bearing were OK.
I put a 2ndH Pump back in reconnected the Sender wire and away it went for another 5 years B4 selling it for $2,500 an original Turboless Turbo.
This car had done over 600km with NO Oil Pressure and only the Turbo Failed at about 450km.

Another thing in regards to Hi Vol Oil Pumps, Don't they just continaully dump excess Pressure through the Releif Valve anyway ?

I've had a high vol pump in my sandman 253 for 15 years. The trick is and you have to be very carful is to modify the bypass spring as its not the top end pressure that I wanted. Its the idle pressure that I wanted to improve and a high vol pump will do t

Crowe,

When u say "modify the Spring", do u increase or decrease the pressure?

Also (just an add on), Has anyone ever fitted a Hi Vol Oil pump to a Holden six only to find they require Anti-Pump up Lifters at Hi Revs ?

I deceased the spring length, you can get fibre/ copper washers and pack out the plug (hex nut) that holds the bypass spring. Only do one at a time and if you have a gauge you could see how much top end pressure you were dropping.
