Gday great site especially for the uneducated such as myself so heres my pickle.

Im currently removing a M-20 transmition from my 308 hq tunna. The geabox has chewed itself to bits and finally seized altogether as i backed it into the garage to commence work.

My mechanic has told me that an M-20 is sturdy enough for a 5 LItre (mianly used for work purposes) and my question is what are the chances of clutch dramas due to the seizure, will it make removing the trans more difficult and are there any generic bogies to look out for when removing/installing the new trans.

Any info would be greatly appreciated
-Adam

M20 is more suited to a 253 or 6cyl, 308`s would usually have an M21 box.

Hey man if your re-fitting the same (type) gearbox, you should have no troubles! Your clutch is more than likely still ok, but you never know until you have a look!

Make sure you have sufficient clearance under the car when removing the old one (if us

If you are only changing the box, you can leave the bellhousing on the engine if the clutch is OK. Having said that, it is a VERY opportune time to consider changing the clutch if it is past half worn - they are not overly expensive. Before you pull the b

Thanks a lot for all the advice. I removed the old M20 today without and dramas and am subsequently searching for a recon M20 tomorrow. The heavy duty clutch seems to be in good nic all round and would have been engaging nicely.
It's nice to take some h

If you are handy with tools, have a go at reco-ing it yourself. At least pull it apart and see how it all fits together. As an exchange they most likely won't care if it's in bits. All you need is 1/2 and 9/16" AF spanners, and internal plus external circ

Once you know what you are doing, the needle rollers in the cluster are a snack. What I did years ago was cut a new layshaft short and drilled and tapped a hole in one end. Once you've vaselined/greased all of the rollers in place, you slide the short sha

I pulled the transmition apart and it looks as though intially only 1 tooth was dislodged from first gear. However when i drove the car into the carport another 2 where kicked off and subsequently got jammed around the counter gear rendering it stuffed and

Hi Adam,

I haven't looked, but I assume there will be an exploded view of an Aussie 4 speed in my HQ and/or HX Parts books.

If you want a scan, send me an E-mail and I'll see what I can find for you.

Cheers...Dave

The new bearing kit will have a new set of needle rollers for the counter gear and also for the main shaft to input shaft bearing. Throw the old ones away.
