Help required in identifing Holden 253 turbo 350/400/Chev Bellhousing Engine.
I have in my posession a Blue factory 253 engine with a factory cast chev bellhousing (not re-drilled Holden Trimatic pattern).

It has a ES ###### series engine number what car is it from ????
Cast 23E9 I believe to be the 23 May 1979????
Perhaps a experimental engine?? I don't Know, thus help required.

The 253's I have seen are as follows:
HQ-HZ have QR series engine numbers
Commodore have V series
WB have W
Torana have L

Hi Rockett.

The 253 block you have is not actually out of a Holden.

The ES prefixed block is out of a Bedford truck.

E = E series Bedford truck (1979 to 1983)
S = lo-compression 253 (it will have originally had a larger than normal dish in the p

There are heaps more 253 engine prefixes, and Torana are H not L. Examples: 253L, 253H, QR, QS, 11QR, 11QS (possibly), HR, HS (possibly), WR, VR plus others i've long forgotten. ES and ER are new to me. The Chev bolt pattern does not surprise me though. A

That's a Nasco or GMP&A (GM parts and accessories) factory replacement short motor. Numbers were sequential for all types eg NP1001 for XU-1 followed by NU1002 for GTS350 followed by NR for HQ 253 etc. I used to have NP36**, so yours will most likely be H

253 pistons are standard flat top for earlier engines, and dome top for later ADR27A engines. That's for the R engine anyway. I'm not sure how big of a dish the S engines had.
