it is to prevent the rear brakes from locking up when there is no load. these often fail and most people bypass them

The pressure limiting valve on the rear brakes of an HJ is called the proportioning valve. It is fitted near the master cylinder & also incorporates the differential switch. While it doesn't truly 'proportion', it is there to prevent rear whee
