Today when I replaced a welsh plug on the side of the blockof my 253 I also noticed water dripping from the converter cover, I removed the converter cover and used a torch to see water was dripping from the block, about 3/4 up next to the fly wheel ( hard to pinpoint exactly where because the converter and flywheel are in the way) Could someone please tell me whether or not there is also welsh plugs in this area, and if so do I have to drop the gearbox just to replace them ?

Any help would be grateful. Thanks.

There are 4 welsh plugs in the rear of the 253/308 block & unfortunatly for you you will have to drop the box & flex/clutch plate to do the job, I recommend using the original brass type plugs as they seat in better & use a coolant with a rust inhibitor..

Actually you will probably find it easier to pull the motor and box to do it.
You might as well put new big ends and mains and gaskets and oil seals while you are at it. Core plugs usually last hundreds of thousands of ks, and if they have gone the othe
