I've got a HZ ute with a 308 (soon to be 253) and a 6cyl banjo diff that i use for towing. It has worked fine for ages with out a problem but i'm starting to tow heavier trailers more often and i don't think I might be stretching the relationship...

Anyway I have a 2.6 ratio salisbury disc brake diff in the shed that came from a WB statesman. Now i know the obvious stuff that needs to be done to make it fit, like the master cylinder needs to be changed and the mounts changed to suit leaf spring rear, but i'm not sure what the deal with the position of the calipers is.

From memory the calipers foul on the chassis rail or the spring and need to be rotated... can anyone shad light on this? I know it can be done because i have seen a few utes getting around with these disc brakes on the back.

Thanks

My personal opinion is don't use the disc brakes. Get some drum brake axles and use the brakes of the banjo ie leave them in place. If you are going to fit the 2.6 make sure you have:

1. An auto.
2. An M22 4-speed.
3. A wide ratio 5-speed.

im with byron on this...drum rear is better for towing..4wd works great if you want to go racing or want the tossing of seeing discs thru your neat wheels...ive used tonners and utes and vans for 20 years plus for towing and never really had a problem...c

Drums will work better than disks the first couple of hard applications. The advantages of disks are they work better when wet, when worked hard, and are easier to swap pads over. The rear brake linings on drums drive me to hysteria when changing they are

Also for a 253 a ratio of 2.6 is a little high in my opinion. Even 3.08 is only just for highway cruising. You might find yourself doing an awful lot of 2nd gear (or 3rd if 4 sp) driving.
But Byron I think you have been a bit misleading in your answer yo

the tranny is a trimatic with oil cooler so it should work ok.

don't think i understand why drum brakes are supposed to be better... all the experience i have had is that 4 wheel disc kingas have stopped a lot better

The reason that drums on the rear are better than rear discs when towing is that drums have a MUCH larger surface contact area between the linings and the drum than between the pads and discs.

Disc brakes are better at high speeds than drums (or with r

The notion that a 308 was not available on HQ-WB commercials is a myth. The NSW RTA don't help by believing it also. We all know that plenty of HQ-HZ commercials had 308's (the SANDMAN). There were also a couple of prototype HQ's with 350's. There were a

Hi Byron,

Yep, 308's were (relatively) common in HQ - HZ utes/vans/tonners. Officially, they were not available in the WB Commercials, but deals were probably done at the time.

I have a mate who recently bought a brand new VZ Berlina wagon with an L
