I have a HZ with std 253, good compression, aprox 180+psi accross the board. Had it tuned a while back and only recently noticed it pinging when going up hill. The timing was set at 12 deg advanced, as per the spec sticker under the bonnet so I backed it off to 10 degs, but still pings...I now went to 8 degs, am I heading the right way with the timing by retarding it?? It runs on Vortex 98 premium with nulon lead replacement. Any Ideas??

I think the 12 deg is at 1350rpm. Make sure you're not doing it at idle. From memory it shoul dbe about 6deg at idle on a HZ. Also, HZ 253's are very high in compression ratio (around 9.5:1). Changing to a different (and not worn out as most 253/308 cams |

I might be on the wrong track here but when the 308 in the HJ started pinging I connected up a water bottle to the front of the carb and had a stone age water injection and it worked quite well on that. |

Thanks Byron I re-did my timing @1350rpm with the vac hose disconnected but didn't change the timing position much, still around 8 degs. It has an electronic dissy with 12 deg sticker on the vacume unit. I increased the revs with the vacume off and it ad

There is something I did last time when I was rushed and was a real DER thing to do !
When u set the timing, u have to disconnect the vac advance. Set the timing to 6 degs (whatever), then when u r happy with the timing reconnect the vac advance.

Yeh, I know about the vac line....i just missed upping the idle to 1350rpm. Didn't seem to make too much difference connected or disconnected but.
Thanks

Not running a bit lean is it? Shouldn't ping with 98 in it.

I put an electronic ignition into my 202, and eventually realised that it was pinging fairly badly on heavy loads. (Up hills, low revs top gear, etc.)
It's because the electronic ignition was still set up for a blue 202, which has different timing cha

A mild cam would be fine. The one in it is probably half worn out as per normal with Holden V8's. Try running some Ethanol blended fuel through it. That will help clear out any carbon deposits in the combustion chambers. Given that it is still pinging aft |

Regraphed dizzy on my 202 is actually set to 16 degrees static timing. Way off the scale, but it works fine, and that's set using a dyno. Go figure...
Jason.

Hi Jason,
Initial timing is not the determining factor, total timing (initial + vacuum + mechanical) is what you need to be careful off. Usually about 35 degrees of total timing is the most you want on the street. And you only want your total advance t

Dave,
Cool - I originally thought 16 degrees was weird, but I suppose you're right - idle performance doesn't matter a great deal when it comes to timing, it's the higher rev range where it gets important.
That dizzy was set to that on the dyno... I
