Have had this car for over half a year now and quite like it. I wanted to get something older really, but reviewing my budget efficiently excluded the cool EH wagons...
The Kingswood only had 64K miles on the clock and had been relatively well looked after by the old lady owner. Now, with new front shocks and balljoints it's even become very driveable!
Engine runs nice and smooth and starts easily if i pump the accelerator a few times beforehand. I suppose the fuel pump is starting to give in a little bit? Is there a common problem part, like a seal or something? A few months ago there was no need to do the pedal pumps...
Only thing with the engine is it starts "ticking" when i flatten the accelerator up a hill for instance. It's the same sound that could be heard in my family's old Opel Corsa back in Norway, a sound i was told was the valves rattling. I don't think it's pinging, i imagine that would be more violent sounding....? I do run it on the cheapest unleaded petrol though (with the addition of lead replacement!). Could it be pinging and should i really be filling super? Ignition was recently set to 6 degrees BTDC. Think the manual specfies 4-6 degrees and 5 as initial setting. So that should be ok, unless the garage messed it up.. (which wouldn't surprise me).
On the TriMatic: Working quite smoothly when driving, BUT: When standing still and changing gears, especially from D past N, there is quite a loud slamming sound. When starting up with a cold engine it's no big deal, but when parking after a 20 minute drive it's enough to make heads turn. And I DO pull the handle towards me before changing (it's column shift), even so much that the plastic nob on the end broke off...
Is there a way to address this problem with normal handyman skills? Or is it a matter of making adjustments on servo bands or such?
All advice greatly appreciated!
BTW: Any thoughts on (Sydney) value for this pretty much rust free 71 golden Kingswood, 202HC engine, very original and complete with AM radio even, great chrome but paint almost worn through on roof and bootlid, dried out window seals, a few smaller dents. 10 month rego, new parts: Main brake cylinder, rear drums machined and overhauled, radiator, ball joints, front shocks, exhaust + + Interior is fabric on seats and OK condition except for hole on drivers side....
Thanks!!

No idea on the value.
Pinging can be a very subtle sound - it is like someone is sitting in your engine bay shaking a metal container with coins in it.
The first thing I would do with the tranny is change the oil. After that it will possibly need a |

Apparently Leaded Super of the 70's used to be around 95 octane. So if you're running the cheap unleaded, you're getting around 91 octane, which will cause it to ping, more than likely.
It's generally recommended that we run the premium fuels, which a

what costs less 30,000km's worth of valve lube or a reco. head? ;) the noise you hear is definately pinging don't use crappy fuel, imho BP Ultimate a bonus for your car is that it is still registered, but is it roadworthy? depending on repairs needed, w

Hmm, interesting point there... But there's still a need to fork out a lump sum for the head reco... At least i buy 1-litre cans of the lead replacement (that's $18 per 1000 litre of petrol).
Ok, so it's pinging then! Just as i was almost getting used

You can get a Moreys setup it automatically injects the lube and lasts about 20,000 for 2 litres according to the salesman. The clanging is most likely a worn universal there is no easy way to test this except maybe by driving along slowly letting the ca

I had a simular problem with my Tri-matic, slamming in & out of gears, especially if the car has sat for a long period of time & had then been given a good warm up/run, I found out it was the valves inside the box where sticking, because the previous owne |
