I am pritty new to mechanics and the workings of a car but i have a hq model one tonner with a 253block v8. Its a 4 spd and a bitch to drive at 100clicks (im guessing revving around 4 - 4.5 grand). Would getting a 5spd fitted be a good idea?

Short answer is yes (but expensive).
A cheaper option (IF you don't carry heavy loads on it) would be to change the diff ratio to 3.55 or 3.36. Depending on the 1st gear ratio of your 4 speed, you may even be able to go to a 3.08 diff.

yes sounds like you have a 4.44:1 salisbury diff :O if it is, the easiest option is to swap the complete rear axle housing as the diff centres are integral with the housing, try to refit another tunna diff as they are heavier [than normal] duty. you c Edited by user Wednesday, 5 October 2005 7:57:04 AM(UTC)

So to go 3.08:1 would the best option be to fit a commodore diff? SS if you want LSD?
How would that fit into a 1 tonner with leaf springs?

unless you find a 3.08 tonner diff, a normal commercial diff will also fit and would be the cheapest option...otherwise you need to get the leaf spring mountings fitted to your commodore diff, not sure on axle tube lengths, but more mods = more $$$. shop

Just remember that Tonners have larger uni's than utes/vans, so you will have to change the front yoke on the diff.

You can still fit a HQ-WB V8 ute/van diff. You just need to use the 1-tonner axles. If the diff is to be rebuilt use the 1-tonner front yoke too as it uses a 1 1/8" uni (1" on the ute/van). You can buy an adapter uni though if you manage to buy a good dif |
