Need some advice please, fastlaners.....
Motor is stock 173 red, starts easy, runs well, no smoke or excessive oil consumption. Problem is bad lifter rattle on cold start-up that goes away after about 5 seconds or so of fast idle on choke. Would using thicker oil such as 20w/60 help here or is it more designed for engines with worn rings?
Any help much appreciated.

The viscosity of your engine oil isn't the problem.

The oil filter you are using doesn't have an anti drain-back valve. So, all your oil drains back into the sump when the motor sits for a while and it takes a few seconds for the oil to get back to the

Hi QUTE,i like the sound of that, would give motor more protection a bit faster than the typical 6cyl filter on start up wouldnt it.
Has anyone tried this filter for size?,and know for sure if it does have the anti-drain back valve?

Hi Rob,

It says on the box that the Holden filter fits 6 & 8 cyl cars. I put in the AFAIK as I haven't personally tried it.

Cheers...Dave

Hi Dave, I took note of the AFAIK,so thought id ask if anyone else has tried this. Ive decided to go and try it out myself, with an old filter on a motor laying around.
Thanks

Hey
If you buu a new filter to suit a holden straight 6 you will probably find that they have the anti drain back valve, Valvoline and i am pretty sure Ryco do it on all of there filters. Go to your local parts supplier and ask them, or read the box

I have a Valvoline filter (V03) in my van and it has the same problems as rust & grease, takes 5 odd seconds for the oil light to extinguish and rattle to stop, even with fresh oil topped to correct line... I can't recall reading anything about anti-drain

the old 6's ak 186 202 etc and all vt5litre and older use the same filter thread and seat.
the VL-6, VN V6 onwards use a different one.
yes, my VN V8 filter has a run back valve.
not sure if every brand does, mine is a pure-one.

The reason a VN or later filter reduces the lifter noise is it is smaller in capacity, so it takes less time to fill and produce normal pressure.
