Hi all. I have an HZ van with a 253 and Trimatic. I always thought the motor was stock but when I take off from a standing start, the car is a bit slow till the rpms reach about 2500 and then it "turns on", at least the best a 253 can do. I'm thinking it might have a warm cam in it even though the idle is smooth. What I would like to know is, should I put a 2000 rpm-stall torque converter in it so that I can get into the power band quicker? ( I did a stall test and it stalls at about 1200 rpms at the moment.) Also after I fit some extractors, I was thinking about replacing the Stromberg 2 bbl. Which would be better on an almost stock motor, a 350 cfm Holley 2 bbl or a 465 Holley 4 bbl. I intend keeping the motor close to stock, just want it to go a bit quicker with minimum money spent. (Don't we all!!!) Hope someone can steer me in the right direction.....Russell.

Hi Russell,
With that combo, and by the way you describe its take-off, it sounds like you have a 2.78:1 diff.
A stock 253 develops maximum torque at about 2400 rpm (about 50 - 60 kmh in 1st with a Tri and 2.78 diff and about 110 kmh in top). So, you

Thanks for the info, Dave. I always assumed it had a 308 diff in it, maybe not. It does about 40 kph/1000rpm. Would that be a 3.08 or a 2.78 diff? Also, looks like I will have to buy a 4bbl manifold for the Holley 465/450. What would be a reasonable ma

Hi Russell,
It may have a 3.08....I distincly remember mine doing 2,400 rpm at 110 kmh...spot on max torque for an HQ's 253.
If it was an early V8, I'd say go for a stock Holden manifold. On an HZ, I dunno (I haven't played with heads with EGR ports

Before building the hot 308 for it, my bro-in-law startd with a stock 253 HZ Kingswood SL. What realy woke it up as a stocker was fitting the HEI dizzy from a blue motor, and using a VK manifold & rejetted VK 5L quadrajet. It would be easier to get one |

Buy a KC 253/308 valley. It fits all red, blue and black motors up to VL (but not Walkinshaw). It's a copy of a VH/VK group III valley. Greg at Classis Oz Wreck had one a while back. |
