Hey all, my new HP is in, running and driving (FINALLY)!

My problem is that its blowing smoke. Not just your average Hyundai Excel smoke, im talking SMOKE! It had 50km on the clock when i decided to call my engineer, and he said take it for a highway drive, so i did! But i used 3 litres of oil on the drive, and still blows hardcore smoke!

Everything in the motor is new, pistons, rods, cam, head has been worked, exhaust system even... No oil leaks either...

My engineer is a top bloke and has been in the industry for years upon years!

It needs a tune, but its not that out of tune!

I am gobsmacked to what it could be!

Keith

My car and i like to drink the same stuff... ALCOHOL! Shame i cant drink as much as him...

Sounds like rings to me - were the bores prepped correctly for the type of rings used?
Were the right size rings used?

When does it blow smoke? All the time? Only under power? Only on the over-run & not under power?

Cheers,

Mick

it does sound like cracked piston rings, it could be something else but using 3L of oil in such a short time couldn't be much else. maybe a sticky valve or [gasp] cracked head/block? [/gasp] good luck

Maybe the rings were pt in with the gaps in line. Pressurising the sump.

Maybe... I put the piston rings on the pistons myself, my engine builder (neighbour) inspected them all before we put them into the motor, so im unsure! But he has done this many a time before, he even owns a HP with the equivalent amount of work done!

Was it rebored?I think you can discount the cracked head/block theory that would mean water problems rather than oil.
It only takes one ring to be buggered to cause a problem like that. I think you will have to pull the pistons. Also the oil ring may hav

Keith, It sounds like the problem could be as simple as the rings not being bedded in. You have to warm up the engine & drive it around flooring the accellerator pedal (but not labouring the engine with too few revs) until the engine gets to about 3/4 of

Its the PCV....

I proved this by taking the piping from the carby (pcv related) off and going for a drive.... The baffles in my rocker cover are filling up with oil and it has nowhere else to go but up (especially with the vacuum from the pcv)...

you will probably find that it is filling the rocker cover with oil beacause of the HV oil pump which im pretty sure you mentioned it having in another post. you generally dont need them on holden engines.
