A workmate is having trouble with the alternator in his VP V6 Commodore ute.
The alternator light comes on occasionally and it stops charging his battery. He knows this because the first time he ignored it and his battery was drained.
He now gets out of the car and whacks the alternator with a piece of wood (I'm sure this is the correct method).
When he does this he hears a 'click' like a relay kicking in, the engine revs drop then slightly (alternator loading up) and the light goes out.
Can anyone tell us exactly what is causing this. Is there an internal relay that can be changed or a voltage regulator etc.
Failing that can anyone suggest a good (cheap) place that sells exchange alternators in the Adelaide area.
Any idea on what they are worth.
Thanking you all in advance
Darren

Sounds like the brushes are worn down.
They are part of the regulator assembly (black box on the back of the alternator). If you are handy with a soldering iron, you can change them yourself for around $5 each, or simply buy a whole new regulator & br |

Thanks Mick,
I've passed that info on to him.
We had pretty well told him the same thing but it always helps to get another opinion.
As the car has around 250,000kms on it I believe he is better off getting an exchange alternator anyway.

hehehe, bet he's scratching his head wondering about all of us on here!
With 250K on it he's done well, most fail well before that!
The later model ones I have replaced were all on VS models: A few years ago, 155,000km on a VS1 V6, then again at 30 |
