Ive just bought a lovely 4.2 HJ ute with a Supra 5 spd conversion already installed. Trouble is the clutch pedal to clutch fork setup has been Frankenstein-ed to convert the original (cable) pulling action into the required pushing action using a poorly designed fulcrum type thingo (Not pretty). The result is an incredibly hard pedal and not enough clutch travel to permit smooth changing though the gears. I want to bin this monster and convert to a hydraulic system, but I dont really want to pay $400 for a $50 master and slave setup. Has anyone had any experience in this area? Can an earlier model holden hydraulic setup be easily modified and installed? If so, is it wise to grab the clutch pedal lever out of the same vehicle or easier to modify the existing (cable type) clutch pedal. Any advice in this area would be much appreciated, as the way i,m heading I'll need a knee reconstruction soon!

It sounds like you've got a factory HX/HZ clutch setup. There are a few ways to go:

1. Hydraulic as you suggest.

2. Original HQ/HJ V8 rat-trap - difficult to find in V8 guise.

3. Replace bellhousing with a pull fork style (late HZ/WB/Commodore) a
