have had problems recently with the fan switch not working. currently only have one speed and that is if i can get it to work at all. needs some manipulation to get it to work. its as though there is some problem with contacts making contact or something can any one advise on remidies short of spending in excess of $400 to get a new assembly

If it is a VL (common fault with VL's), then we have a heap of these switch mechanisms at work.
