I have a 99 CD Astra, just done 150,000k.

Had a bit of a noise issue coming from the engine bay, my mechanic has isolated it to a fault in the power steering pump. He reckons I can drive with it, as long as I'm happy to put up with the noise (good to have an honest mechanic). He reckons the new pump will be $1200, plus about $300 for labour, so total cost $1500.

I've been thinking about getting something more recent anyway, so this is a catalyst to do something about it.

My question is: If I trade in the Astra with a dealer on another car is it better to:

1) Get the pump fixed first
2) Trade it in as is and be upfront about what the problem is
3) When the dealer says "what's that noise", say "I hear nuffink!"

Hi Knoddie

This is a question similar to my Mum in law who wouldnt spend $1500 on bodywork and spent $13000 on a new car !! Go figure !

(1) Whats the Astra worth ? Prob around $9000 right now. YOu replace the pump, and you are out of pocket $1500 NO

RING AROUND. I'm sure a secondhand pump at a wreckers who do not bother to check new prices will be less than $200. Inquire about rebuilding yours - you might be surprised how cheap it may be. Unless it's an absolute dog of a job you could probably change

knoddie, may need a second opinion, our cd has electric power steering, runs from the alternator, although ours is a 2002. Al.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll have a look at the second hand part option

You could also try Nulon power steering conditioner in it. For the $11 it's worth a try.
