G'day all, I have an HX Tonner with an HQ style font end, and I looked at my mates HX sedan and the inner guards look identical, so what gives here?, everyone keeps telling me if I want to put an HJ- HZ front end on it I need to change the inner guards, but I'm buggered if I can see any difference, and the cars were parked next to each other (well almost)! can someone tell me where the difference is , is it just in the location of the mounting holes or something? 'cause if it is couldn't new holes be drilled to get around the problem, or is there a fundamental difference that I am missing somewhere? any help appreciated. Thanks. Russ.

Hi Russ,
I, too, have heard all the people saying that the HQ and HJ - HZ inner guards (properly called Skirt Assembly, Front Fender) are different.
I just had a look in my HQ and HX parts manuals (don't have the HJ or HZ ones) and the Part Numbers

I should have mentioned that the Skirts Assemblies are listed in both the HQ and the HX book as suiting all models (which includes Tonners with the HQ style front panels).

WB ones are different. The locations for the captive nuts are different due to the WB guard being shorter in the wheelarch. The hole locations for equipment is also different eg carbon canister, washer/overflow bottle, harness (WB is in black corrugated), |

In saying that, will HJ-HZ outer guards fit on a WB if the stone tray is also changed? It is obvious that they are different, looking externally, but will other mods be needed?

No Nic, the WB guards are cut higher at the front than the earlier cars adn WB's don't have a nosecone as such...they sort of have a collection of closely fitting bits.
Actually, there is one way to fit earlier guards to a WB but it involves cutting th

For those restoring cars to original the HQ/J are differrent to HX/Z.
The HQ has 3 plugs and staples holding the suspension flap cover and the HX/Z have 5 plugs.

WB guards also have a bolt hole in a different spot that the nose panel bolts to. If you use modified HJ-HZ guards you can't fit this bolt and the nose doesn't pull up tight onto the guard leaving an ugly gap, right at the top where the guard goes from ve |

Ah, that's why that happens. I've never done it but have seen some that have been done and it looks terrible. Thanks Byron.

Cheers guys, I wasnt entirely sure, but on closer inspection of an HZ and mine today I understand what you have said here... Shame that its not as simple as I thought, a nice set of GTS guards could have looked quite nice.

There is a dude out near Gunnedah that can press the HZ GTS flutes into your WB guards for you. I think he does it through a Sydney Monaro Club member. |
