One of the independant servos in Newcastle is selling a new Ethanol (<10%) blended ULP that is 3 to 4 cents per litre cheaper than their 91/92 octane fuel. It is rated at 94 octane. Interesting stuff! I've always found that with long term use of ethanol blended fuel that engines tend to ping less, mainly caused by the de-coking action that ethanol performs on the combustion chambers. I know ethanol blended fuel gives slightly less economy and slightly less power, but at last someone is selling it cheaper, and if it allows cars with around 9.4:1 compression to run without pinging then it must be a good thing. It allows me to run a red 308 on petrol occasionaly without paying for PULP.

Hi Russ,

My HQ 253 red - std points and carb doesnt ping. Never has. Never revs high enough. You'd need to be doing around 160kmh with a 278 diff to get that effect.

Byron may correct me, but ethanol absorbs moisture and eats rubber. So those seals

The ethanol blend fuels are OK for older cars (for those without hardened seats, get them or use flashlube!), they tend to run a bit worse but nothing a slight adjustment of the ignition timing and carby adjustments wouldnt fix!!
I read the article Zac i
