Hi Guys, Can someone tell me how many horsepower a stock standard 253 Holden v8 could produce new. I'm putting one in a 39 Plymouth and was wondering what the difference between the original 82hp at 3600pm and the 253. Elvis.

Around 120kw in red form, they did better with the 4 bbl carby in WB Holdens and VH Commodores (the 2bbl carby didn't do the engine justice). They can be made to go well, but yeah they'll never be a 308 or better!

Never late with a 308!! |
202 and three on the tree, can't get more Aussie than that!! |

A 253 in a Torana is capable of low 14's down the quarter (with a quaddie)... Thats speaking well of it!! Although 4.2litres compared with the 3.0litres of my motor's a big difference and i believe mine's only just slower down the 1/4!! For a plymouth

In 1975 a 253 produced 185 HP according to the official figures and a 308 was 240. Thing progressively declined from then on. Hope this helps.

I go with Glenn.
From the HQ Service Manual Volume 4 page 4. It says 185bhp @ 4400 for a 253. And it says 240bhp @ 4800 for a 308.
Cheers john

100 hp is near enough to 75 kw. I used to have a 39 Plymouth 4 door. Lost one of the headlight rims and couldn't get another for love nor money. That's one of the problems of buying cars with styling only good for one model. actually the early 253s (and

An early 253 with a good cam stock exhaust manifolds and 2 bbl inlet with no mods and comp at around 10.1 and you will get approx 120 kw(160.92 hp)at the wheels thats better than some 308s Around, 253s in commodore cup racing are getting nearly 200kw at

Hey fellas, I have a sneaking suspicion that those early figures from the HQ Service Manual of 185bhp @ 4400 for a 253and 240bhp @ 4800 for a 308, where at the engine and not the wheels. I wasnt till the later 70s when they began stating KW figures at t

Hi Guys.
This question of comparing engine output figures from different eras pops up often.
NO manufacturer quotes Rear Wheel Horsepower. They are all measured on an engine dyno. The thing is the method or standard of measure used.
