Hi all,

I was thinking of doing some things a little different on the HJ tonner, one thing being push button ignition (if that's what you call it).

1) Is this illegal??
2) I was just going to reroute the ign wires from the steering column up to a push 'switch' under/on the dash (not too sure where to put it yet - any suggestions?) maybe in place of the lighter? just got to make sure no passangers push it while driving....?

Thanks all
Void

In olden days the button was on the floor and used to be the cranking button only. With the ignition key being for the points/ignition.

If you do the crank and ignition without a key you'll be making your ride easier to steal !

you'll need a switch/button that doesn't lock on - ie - one of those buttons which is marked "momentarily on".

If you're worried about the button beiong pushed while in motion, try a swinging cover for it like on those missile switches. Most of those a

Damn straight they look ricey!! haha!! A swing cover isn't a bad idea though... oh, and I am up with the momentary on. : )
I have seen the FPV buttons and that is how I was looking at doing it - key for 'run' and button to crank. I wouldn't change the

put the button under the bonnet, any potential thief who sees you having to get under the bonnet to start her up will go elsewhere looking for a reliable car to steal, lol

Most cars pre 1946 had push button start - including Fords.

However in many wartime trucks the starter switch is like a high beam switch. so you could disguise your starter as a high beam switch.

Ideas keep coming - perhaps a second switch under the dash to disable it?

If you wire the switch so that it only has power when the ignition switch is on (power to the coil)then it is no different to the exiting configuration.

If it is located to the right of the steering wheel you don't have to worry about passengers poking

I wanted to put one of those old school video game button on a custom dash - you know those big circle ones? They're a heavy duty switch, too.

Fitted one to our VW bus. It is a rubber covered button, same as used in a lot of boats. It is actually good in the VW, because they have a lockout on the crank on the ignition after it has been used once. You must turn the ignition all the way back to of

Hey all,

Thanks heaps for the replies - I've got some good ideas! Just got to find the right 'looking' button now... I do like the ones in the FPV's (I can't believe I just typed that either!!), but something less conspicuous would be fine too!
