G'day all and happy new year to you's,
I did a search that didn't really tell me enough so.... What is the best disc/calliper option to use on a HJ?
.Are the std brakes great?? .I have heard people talk about volvo brake upgrades?? .Is the VT twin piston and bigger disc upgrade heeeeaaps better..?? .Can the VT upgrade be done using callipers and discs from the wreckers and diferent sized bearings (similar to upgrading a vn-vs)? and how compatible are the brake lines?
Thanks for the help guys - I'm still learning this kind of stuff about the older holdens...

if it depends on how many dollars you want to spend, if the car is an original disk front then i'd keep it that way unless you have front drums (which were still available with the hj!) otherwise the cheap option would be to upgrade to HZspec discs and ca

I have heard alot of good thing about hopper stoppers! they are reasonable cheap to. zac
Nothing beats cubic inches !!!

I may sound a bit stupid here but what benefits will you get from the bigger brakes on a car like the HJ? I've put the later model Girlock calipers on the ute and with drum brakes on the back it pulls up brilliant. BUT when I hook the trailer up and put |

Well for a start you end up will different stud patterns. Then to keep it legal it has to be engineered. Unless you are planning to give the brakes a hard time it hardly seems worth the effort.

Also, unless you get a conversion kit from Hoppers Stoppers or someone similar, you can't just bolt the VT discs onto an earlier car. The hubs and bearings come as a set and can't be bolted on to an earlier stub easily.

Thanks all - that just the kind of info I was after.. as the motor in the ute will soon be a turbo 202 I will have to get it all engineered and I am guessing a brake upgrade will be required... even if it isn't, I want it done.

there is no need to change the stud pattern, most commodore wheels are ugly anyway.
the hoppers stoppers kit use a billet hub (uses HQ wheel bearings, which are the same as commodore upto VP) and floating disc both drilled to whatever stud pattern you

My Overlander has the following brake sizes (original HZ in brackets) and it has great brakes:
Front discs: 300mm diam x 31mm (min) thickness (HZ 276mm x 24.5mm).
Rear drums: 280mm diam x 65mm machined surface (HZ 254mm x 50.8mm).

Are you sure the turbo will have to be engineered? In any case it would be hard pushed to put out the same or better power than the big V8s. The larger brakes could mean you have to change the booster as well.

Your HJ brakes will take up LOTS of time and money to feel as powerful as your VS's brakes. On the other hand, you should go through many sets of pads on your HJ before your discs are cactus. Depends how hard you are on brakes. When I sold my VSIII with 60,000kM on it it still had the oreiginal pads, and they were only half worn. It was a manual though. |

Agreed on the VS brakes Byron. Mine was a 5 speed too and had fairly new pads but original discs when I bought it at 80,000 K's. When I sold it just shy of 160,000 K's, the pads were still OK but the discs were about ½ worn.

I have a HJ sedan with a 454 chev in it and that passed a engineers certificate. Front brakes were original discs (machined) with Bendix (standard) brake pads. Rear disc were VN Commodore with Bendix (standard) brake pads. He even said after the brake tes

Haha - no I don't want it to pull up like a late model car, that will probably never happen.....
The question was posted to see how effective the original system was considered to be, and if it was insufficient, to find out what good upgrades people co |

If your going to stick with early calipers make sure you use the cast iron caliper with DB1045 pads out of all the early calipers this is the best(aluminium ones flex to much )for everyday driving, and for track use just fit good set of pads(HQ racers

A conversion to the VT Commodore twin piston calipers to the front end is quite an easy task with the kits that are available now and does improve braking performance markedly. Well worth the investment in time, money and safety. It is possible to get som

if your still looking at options i reckon the hoppers stoppers is the way to go, i rang them up and spoke to a guy there for a while bout fronts for my hj with a blown 327 and the make a set up that bolts on to standard hub and uses au xr8 twin piston cal |
