HI guys. Could someone inform me of the legalitys of this? I have a couple of HQs, some rusty, some with good engines etc, and am wondering what the story is with how much you can change before its a different car. More specifically, if I wanted to gut my rusty car, put a new shell on the old chassis, (keeping the engine too),could I replace everything inside it, and the big question, can I swap over the compliance plates to keep it with the original matching numbers??? And if that is illegal, how would somebody tell if its been done? Any advice appreciated. Cheers.

You can swap anything you like except the compliance plate. The body that you choose as the best will need to be registed as itself when you are have completed the job. if a different engine is used this will be noted when registed, but as you can imagine

the chassis number determines the ADR's that have to be complied to.
if you put an HZ subframe under an HQ body it will be an HZ, not an HQ.

in nsw you can register without compliance plates but not vin plates that i am aware.....therefore not making it illegal to remove them...for registration they will go off chassis number as dylan said... |

Cheers guys. Which one is the vin plate? I have the number stamped into the chassis but is there a plate somewhere there too? The vin IS the chassis number is it not?

No. The chassis number is the one on the chassis near to the steering box, and it will also be on the compliance plate. eg BHZ09543B. The VIN plate is the skinny plate and will read something like 8M70THH123456Z |

When they talk about a VIN they are not talking about what GM-H called a VIN in the 70s.
The VIN today is what we called a chassis number years ago. Today GM-H have made the VIN and Chassis number the same thing.
So for registration you need a numbe
