Is the cable that goes from left to right rear wheel, connecting to the two smaller cables called the intermediate handbrake cable? Is it normal that they rub on the exhaust pipe? I've had two break on me in four months - the second one was from a wreckers, so this time I'll use Rarespares and get a new one.

If the exhaust isnt correctly put in, the answer is yes. Most exhaust places dont check this point. When I got my pipes redone I made sure the guy that did it(a top bloke)..flattened that part of the pipe.

Yes the cable that connects 2 rear short cable is intermediate cable.
if it ain't broke we can improve it.
