Has anybody had a problem with VS V6 commodores rattling? It sounds like a balancer rattle/knock although the balancer has been replaced. So to has the torque converter and the noise is still there with belt off and/or balancer unbolted. The timing chain and tensioner were also renewed to no avail. After this stage the engine was removed and dismantled when No.2 cam bearing was found to have spun. There was excess play in the camshaft to bearings as expected but block was undamadged so it was honed has new rings and bearing throughout and was reassembled. Of course all tolerences were measured by my local machine shop and no other problems were found. Upon reassembly there was a minor sort of lifter rattle which soon dissapeared except for a very similar sort of engine rattle that we had to begin with. After approx 1000km the noise was unchanged and the inlet manifold came back off to check cam bearings (which looked to still be in place) and replace all the lifters. Noise still there. It was also noted with the inlet manifold off that the balance shaft had a bit of play in the gears (bearings ok) so the timing cover came off once again and the gears renewed. I am running out of ideas real fast, and appart from pulling the engine out again and measuring every tollerence with a fine tooth comb i can't think of anything else that could cause the problem. Has anybody had a similar problem, have i missed anything? PLEASE HELP!

Hopefully you don't have the misfortune of dealing with a slack machine shop, "they do exist".

When u found the spun Bearing, did they tunnel bore the Block lands or machine the Cam and use OvSz Bearings ?

Is the ignition set up Tested, (Pinging ?

It's not a water pump bearing gone...I did a check on a mates car for a strange noise and found it was the water pump....a cheap fix. Did you say it was present with or without the belt on?? if it's still there with the belt removed then it's not the wate
