What signs does a busted brake booster give?

I get a whoosing from the pedal area when I apply the brakes, the lever travel has doubled, as well as that the tri hangs onto gears wayyyy too long. Vaccuum leak right?
All the hoses seem tight to me, so I was wondering if the diap[hagm in the booster could be split, and what signs does it give?

Yep, BIG vacuum leak, and I'd point the finger at the diaphragm in the booster.
The whoosh on the brakes is the dead giveaway, as the front side of the diaphragm is in vacuum, and the rear side goes to atmosphere when you apply the brakes - thus the va |

Balls. new booster it is then. can i simply replace the diaphagm, or would it be better to do the whole unit?

Depends on what model & what booster.
In the later cars the cost of a rebuild exceeds that of a new booster.

To my knowledge we home mechanics cant really or don't have the right tools to do the rebuilds of boosters. I believe its a pretty specialized job.
