Hi all,

I have recently been told that it is possible to determine the build date of Holden V8's by using the casting number on the front LH side of the block near the timing cover.
Is this correct.

I have lookes at 3 blocks in the shed and they have the following marks.

253 (supposedly original from a 8/72 HQ) has E102

253 (not sure where it's from) has 12L5

308 (11QT motor pulled from HJ Stato) has 8L7

Do these numbers mean anything? Is this a valid way of dating a block?

regards
Darren

E102 = 10/5/02 ie HQ

12L5 = 12/11/75 ie HJ

8L7 = 8/11/77 ie HZ

These are the casting dates. Before 1973 the blocks used the GM US coding with the month before the day. These codes are everywhere on a Holden. Start looking on the column, heads, ge
