Guys I know that there were changes to the Trimatic gearboxes through the cycle, but not too sure which one to use for the rebuild, I have one out of a HQ (HT series on the plate) and one out of a WB? (FU series on the plate)
My question is would either one of these be "better" for my conversion or are they so similar it wouldnt matter?
Matt

Most WB ones have a left hand shift, although the column shift examples will be right hand shift. The WB and commodore boxes were better, especially the very late VK and VL examples. If you are going to be doing a lot of towing an original VK EFI one, or

Thanks Byron, the WB and the HQ one both have a right hand shift, which I want to keep cause of the Column shift, so I can asume from this post I should get the FU series box rebuilt and use that? If I was to try and find a later box would I have to go to

No, you can use the later guts in an early case. The shift is just a rod. Simply rebuild the WB one with V8 internals ie more clutches.

This is what we did with the EH Limo. We had a VK trimatic box and had the shift changed to RH side. The auto guy said it was a good box to start with being VK, he just used an old RH shift housing to rebuild it into.
If it is old or rare - Cut it! http://www.ehlimo.com.au/

Sounds like a plan! will ditch the early one and upgrade the FU series one to V8 internals when the rebuild comes time, Thanks so much for the info, saved me a costly mistake!

Whiilst on the subject of early versus later cases what about the 360 degree

I've used VK EFI boxes before, but they had the older style housings. The onlt cars I've ever seen the full circle housing on ar 4cyl starfires and 173 Commodores. Not sure what the difference is. They will bolt up to the red motors though.

Thanks Byron, I think the WB, VB had the 360 degree bell housing but if what you say is true they went back to older style housings then they must have been better? (or they had a stockpile of parts to clear)
Might switch back to the 3/4 bell housing of
