Hi all. Have seen and heard a bit about widened GTS rims. Does anybody know much about this? Is it a matter of taking the centre out and getting new rims fitted around the wheel? How much it cost? Who does it? How wide should you go etc? Would like to look into it... Cheers.

Yes that's exactly what they do.
They cut the centre out and install it into a wheel of your chosen width and can change the offset if required.
You can even get the diameter increased.
Going to 15 inch gives you a wider selection of tyres availa

Are the standard GTS rims 6 inch all round? If so would a good combo be something like 7 at the front and 9 or 10 at the back? Im not sure what I have on my van at the moment. The front is 205 and the rear is 225. I think thats 7 and 8 in

yeah the standard wheels are all 14 by 6.
personally i would like bigger than 7" on the rear of my vasn but you may run foul of the police.
I have spoken to an engineer about getting wheels widdened and he said to steer clear of 9" and either go 8,

be careful with the rego authorities as I believe by the letter of the law that front and rear rims must be same size and width.
Maybe you can get a car passed if an engineer approves it though. I'm not sure.

It wasn't BS. 7" rims are optional or standard on HJ-WB. The Polycast 14x7 was optional on HJ-HZ, and standard on the HX LE. WB had 15x7 standard on Caprice. The general rule is 25mm wider than the widest available, hence 8" is OK. |

Hi Byron, I wish that were true in WA...we can only go to 8" rims if that particular car comes from the factory with 8" rims fitted. If I take my factory 8" mags off the SS and bolt them onto an Exec VY, the Exec becomes illegal in WA...dumb, I know... Edited by user Wednesday, 15 February 2006 11:49:21 AM(UTC)

AFAIK the 17 x 8 and 18 x 8 inch rims are optional on most modern Commodores. I've got a VY sales brochure at home and will have a look. |

Yes, Byron, 8" rims are optional but must come with a change in Tyre Placard so the rims are legal in WA. Should have mentioned the VY/VZ would need to come with stock wheels for it to be illegal with 8's in WA.
The Rim width you can have is determined

i read a story once about a girl who was driving a VL Commodore, got pulled over, cop opened the bonnet and said to her "if you don’t have an engineers certificate for that turbo im going to have to defect you" she replied by telling them that VL's came f

Your wide wheels. Talk to your insurance company also. i have 8 and 10 inch wheels on my van. The front off set is still standard. and on the rear i have 4 inch backspace. 6 inch dish. they look tough but my rear wheel track is just border line legal in N

The other thing to be aware of is that 7" rims are actually 8" wide, 8" rims are actually 9" wide and so on.
The rim width is measured between the beads (where the tyre mounts) and there is an extra ½" of rim either side of the bead.

My old HQ Ute was modded, and its ert plate gave wheel sizes of 15x7 front and 15x15 rear. It had then been streeted considerably, and was actually running 14x7 front and 15x10 rear. The VTNZ inspector (on about its 8th warrant with me, with same wheels |
