hey guys, im 19 and drive a 4.2l vh commodore. i am shopping around for a vs/vt ute, and got told that in june/junly, new laws are being introduced to all P-platers, that eliminate all v8's noi exception, and all turbo's, (excluding turbo diesels). this law i agree with, however, i tried phoning the p;oice, to enquire about a transition period, and they were close to as much help and a pig. this dissapoints me, as all im after is some info. any help would be of use. also anyone selling a vs/vt ute, please let me know. much appreciated, Andrew Southeast Victoria

Hi Andrew,
The Police enforce the rules set down by Vic Roads, so I'd suggest going straight to the source and ask them.
Ring VicRoads on 13 11 71 (Monday to Saturday - 8:30am-5:00pm).

they did it in NSW, and its a stupid law, it doesnt take into accout the power output or weight of the car, so you can drive a 265 6 pack hemi powered charger, but a HZ with a clapped out 253 is not allowed. Victoria's current laws are much better. 125kw/

It's funny how people get wrong model numbers in their heads. Like a VN ute, or for that matter a VT ute. No such thing as either. The other one that has become apparant to me whilst shopping initially for a CV8, and then afterwar |

The idea of these laws hardly make sense when a P plater can still ride a 250 motorbike capable of 200+ kmph

Or even Worse Siggs, after twelve months of riding under 250 class there is an automatic upgrade to open licence for any sized bike, sure a Hyabusa will handle just your old Postie 110! AAAARRRRGGGGHHHH But that is OT a little - OOPS SORRY Matt

Surely it *has* to be just that the government wants to be seen as taking action against the road toll... and the general mindless public sees banning P-platers from driving 8 cylinder engines as taking action.

This is very interesting, so in NSW a P plate driver, for the full length of their Ps cannot drive a V8, or any vehicle on the prohibited vehicle list, is this correct???
I tried to check the RTA site and found a prohibited vehicel list but not the rul

n standard form the 3.8L commodores are quicker to 100km/h than the equivilant 5L versions

i think there are way to get around it! by wot i read on the web site. it said exemption of family cars. so just regestrer it in ya oldies name and only drive ya car every now and agian and if ya get pulled over just tell the cop that your car wouldn't st

when i got my p plates 13 odd years ago i couldnt drive a HX Kingswood with a 308 because of the power to ratio rules that we had in melbourne. These days i see p platers driving HSV,s and tickfords and over late model injected 8,s with their p plates |

i am in a situation, after talking with my father, and him suggesting we upgrade my vh, to a 5-speed, and possibly a bigger engine. i am unsure whether to just spend the extra dough, and buy a vu ute. i love my vh, however, a 5-speed, new bell housing, it

The reason the P-platers are happy to break the law is not so much the lack of police enforcement (which is a small factor) but 2 other reasons:
1. The weight is debatable - the vicroads weights are all over the place with no correlation to official we |

So it all boils down to australias piss week laws and punishments. $75 fine to drive a V8 is pretty week.

you get a $125 fine (or whatever it is) for doing 2km/h over the limit. $75 cant be right.
does anybody know of a weight bridge in melbounre that do cars? wonder if they would do it at the tip for ya.
