I am going to check out an engine tomorrow and it is suppose to be a 308, is there any way of telling a 308 from a 253 by sight as this engine is out of the car and running.

It is normally cast in to the side of the block. On the passenger side down low.
Depending on what era it is the engine number will also help.
Anything starting with QT is a 308 and QR is a 253.
Also find out if it is a trimatic bolt pattern or

yes there is. when looking at the engine from the front. the engine size is located rhs of engine block. . .253 . .308. hard to miss

QR= 253 High comp QS= 253 Low comp QT= 308 Engine's with engine number prefix 11 is statesman and statesman De ville. Cheer's
life's to short not to be....

Just near where the starter mounts the engine size is cast into the block.
if it ain't broke we can improve it.

Hey, with the eng number ref to the high or low comp, my HZ 253 has a number NR1---5, is this a high comp?

IIRC this is for your VH commodore isn't it?
If so, then there's a new range of prefixes for commodore engines, and you'll need a blue motor anyway for emmissions compliance.

A turbo block and a trimatic block can be identified by the size and placement of the locating dowells on the rear of the engine block but without pictures this could be hard to explain.
I think from memory that the trimatic ones are only half inch whi

my problem is the 308 in the car at the mo is stuck bad so i'm looking at a replacement, motors still in and is mated to a celica 5 speed (alloy i think)and i dont have the time to pull it out with other commitments at the moment.

You can still tell what it is in the car, evem with a box bolted up, as you can check the 2 top mounting bosses.
