Hi. My best friend's Dad owns a Holden VZ Commodore Berlina (automatic) bought in February 2005. Since he had it it has had several issues that service agents have not been able to identify, but which have caused us concern.

One of the worst is that when moving off from a stationary position in either drive or reverse there is this fairly loud grinding sort of sound that seems to occur on the right hand side of the car. This only happens sometimes and has happened on all sorts of road surfaces both on the flat and on a gentle slope. I've been in the car on most occasions when it has happened and it sounds almost, but not quite, like gears on a manual not meshing. Also, unrelated to the crunching sound, the car seems to lose power from time to time.

My brother, who designs gearboxes thought that what I described to him sounded like traction control "stuffing up". There's a button which you are meant to push to engage traction control, but it hasn't been on on any of these occasions.

I also want to mention that there are annoying things that the service agents couldn't or wouldn't fix: like the fuel warning comes on when there are only 60 litres left(!) and the headlights are focussed so far off to the left that when the car is pointed straight ahead on low beam, there's a great dark V in the middle of the road, yet off to the left is brightly lit.

Please, if anyone could help suggest what's wrong with the car, or what he could do to get proper service I would be so relieved. He just wants his car to work and he's frustrated that the service agents (who have looked at the car on 6 different occasions) won't help and are being just insulting by suggesting that the noises and power loss are all in his mind.

Thanks,
Cate

Cate, I've owned a number of new Holdens and on each occassion I have had to go to GMH directly to get dealers to fix problems. I would suggest that your friends dad go back to the dealer and demand that the car be fixed properly and indicate that if it

Thanks Geoff J.

It's a bit disappointing to think you have to stalk people to get what you pay for. My friend went to GMH and they said that he would have to go back to the service agents and that they could only identify problems based on ordinary se

Have you tried a different Holden dealer? You don't have to stick with the selling dealer if you're not satisfied. Holden service is really appalling - on one occassion with new VS Calais about 10 years ago the service manager said to me after I complain

Thanks again for that Geoff - you're tops! I like your suggestion of getting the NRMA or whoever to check it out - that's a great idea! I will pass your comment onto him.

Does the Berlina have the 5 speed auto in it? If it does, there is a well known noise issue with them. It can appear to come from the front left or right wheel and does sound like a grinding noise. Last I heard (6 months ago), they were still working on a

It does have a 5 speed auto! YAY! This is exactly what I was hoping for! Front right wheel! It's a V8. With the fuel warning, it comes on when you have 60litres of fuel left in the vehicle. That means it is almost always pinging away. I think we'll d
