Just was wondering what the difference was between these two box's.
I have been told that the T350 is just a trimatic in a turbo housing, and that the T400 is alot stronger. Is this true or is someone pulling my leg again. I bought the T400 because I was told it was a better box for towing heavy loads.

Hi ChrisHQUTE.

Yes, the TH400 is a stronger box, it is built to go behind Big Block Chevs & is used in C20 pick-ups etc. But it does 'use' a bit more power than other boxes.

The TH350 is not directly related, other than its source, parts-wise it's j

I would always choose a TH400 for a tow vehicle, or for an engine bigger than 350 cubes. They are hard to kill. Simply need a proper oil cooler and regular filter changes and they will last for years. Having said that there is nothing wrong with a TH350 o

Hi Chris.

The Tri-Matic with the RH shifter shaft is the obvious choice if you want to go column shift.

If you want to go column shift with a TH400 or TH350 you will need the genuine set-up off an HQ, HJ, HX, HZ or WB with either a TH350 or a TH400

i have owned a few T400's and have always found them (quote byron) hard to kill and i've had quite a few trimatics die on me (although they usually needed a reco anyway)
but i had no idea T350's strength/performance was closer to a trimatic than a T400.

Go for the turbo 400 auto they are a lot cheaper to rebuild. If u rebuild a turbo 350 to the same strength as the turbo 400 it will cost u 3 times the price. im a auto trans mechanic.

If you are going to go out and buy a turbo transmission, and you got a stock or warm V8, then go for the turbo 700 out of a vn or vp, but just remember this one thing, DONT TOW IN FOURTH. you will stress the 3rd/ 4th pack of clutches

Hi Chris.

The single grey wire at the floor shift is for the illumination of the PRNDSL indicator dial.

Every time I get involved in fitting a set of extractors to a V8, it make me think how good the cast iron factory manifolds are.

Extractor fouls on TH400?? Means they are for a manual or trimatic car.
