Can anyone help?? I have just purchased a HX 1 ton that I was told has a 327 in it. A mate who knows more than I do took a real quick look at it and he said it's a 283. He said he could tell because the 283 has a little blank off plug for an oil gauge or something. Anyway, the engine no is 9V185887. The 1 may be an I- i don't know. can anyone shed a little light on it for me?? Cheers Damien

Post the casting number. It's on the rear of the engine just in front of the bellhousing. It sounds like a 283 engine number though. But it still may be 327 cubes, as you can put a 327 crank into any post 1963 283, and bore it to 4" giving you a 327. This |

Chevs are very hard to pick to engine sizes. A 327 and 283 are very similar externaly. Both have small balancers and short water pumps. Although if the engine has been rebuilt at some stage, it could be changed again.
If the engine is out, I'm pretty sur
