Hi guys,

I have an LJ Torana that has sat idle for over 18 months and I can't get it started.

It appears that the fuel pump is not pumping petrol from the tank to the fuel pump. The fuel tank has over 30 litres of petrol in it, but it is not pumping fuel to the glass fuel bowl of which is completely dry.

I thought of disconnecting the rubber fuel line from below the fuel pump and inserting it into a small 600ml bottle of petrol. This way I would be bypassing the main fuel line and fueling it from the bottle in order to get it started.

Otherwise I may have to look at the diaphram in the pump itself.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Kind regards
George

Hi Mate,
I may have misinterpreted what you said! The thing with the glass bowl IS the fuel pump, the only fuel pump. It is not working, must have frozen up during storage. Remove it and clean out crap, or replace.

Can also be that the fuel line has become filled with jellied fuel and dust and gunk. Blow the line out with a compressor, double check ALL rubber hoses in the fuel system to make sure they are fuel-proof and are not letting your pump suck air.

If that

To just get it started you are on the right track with the bottle of fuel. most likely the diaphragm has split.
To test. run the line from the bottle to the pump, but put the bottle low down so the fuel does not syphon through.

My old jeep had a similar problem with an AC fuel pump and it was the cork seal under the glass bowl that had a slight air leak. I would pump all day an no fuel until the gasket was replaced.

Cheers John
