I have an lj torana and just recently replaced the uni joints. That fixed the backlash in the tail shaft but when doing that i noticed alot of freeplay in the diff as well. I think its what you call a banjo diff (2 halves) and i've heard they're not very strong. I'm looking at building up a 308 so rather than just fixing the diff is it worthwhile replacing it? If so, what is strong and bolts in ok?
When i say "looking" at building up a 308 i mean i'm very undecided. It'll just be a weekend car and bit of fun but is a 308 overkill? should i be looking down the 202 path? How easy are they to fit into my torrie as well? Thanks fellas. All help it greatly appreciated

The cheapest line to take would be a fine spline HZ diff centre with a V8 yoke placed on it. L34s ran a banjo diff. The axles can then be made for the fine spline, not that expensive. The only other option would be a 9" diff.
308 in mild form would be

I think Gemini axles are the right length and spline for LJ's - just the wrong stud pattern. |

To have the V8 yoke put on you will need to find a mechanic who can set up diff centres, once done pull your axles out and unbolt the centre.
Put your centre in and the Gemini axles. The axles will need to be drilled for LJ pattern, any automotive engi

Banjos are no big deal as long as you have a shop manual. Salisburys are a completely different story. A banjo comes out from the front of the axle, a salisbury has a plate on the back and comes out from the back.

I meant they are easy to work on. Salisburys are not. they need a specialist.
