There appears to be a few sets of Monaro I/D plates hitting ebay recently. Now I understand there ARE bona-fide collectors out there, but I'm sure some of these plates are destined to end up on cars at shows, when the actual car hit the dump long ago.
Take for instance, the HZ plates currently for auction. Come complete with chassis rails. Great! So if I had a genuine HZ GTS to take to the Nationals in November, I could come up against, and get beaten by a Kingswood SL which has been 'rebirthed' with these plates + some paint and trim.
What if you had a nice genuine GTR Torana, and a really good looking one turns up and scoops the pool (when it actually started life as a Torana S coupe?
Now I know there are some clever judges who can pick the difference, but where does that leave the average buyer out there, who goes to a forum like this one to have numbers decoded, only to find that what they paid for - they aint got - when they are told at the show that a body number stamped into some obscure panel doesn't match the plates.
I'm just playing a bit of Devil's Advocate here, but I'd be interested to hear some views on this. Should people be allowed to sell I/D plates, or should they go to the grave with the car and, thus increase the value of the ones that are left driving around?

Even if it became illegal for ID plates to be sold, chances are the wrecker of the vehicle would know of their potential worth when combined with the appropriate car. As you've said, a person gets rid of a HZ GTS but retains the tags and puts them on a Ki |

As soon as the car is written off, the ID plates should be removed and destroyed. Insurance companies would have to be in possesion of them before they pay out. Maybe that is the solution.

it will never stop, so before buying do your homework or take an expert with you.Insurance cant stop it as most wrecked out cars are not innsured anyway its up to the owner. The reason it wont stop is $$ If you had a rusted out XU1 basket case and some on

What about a new car that has a rear hit so you buy a new body and put your tags on it??? This is a rebirth also, yet was quite legal. The thing is a Kingswood SL body is the same part as a GTS sedan body they were nothing special. If it is modified the t

Well guy's any chance of getting the ball rolling and maybe adding to this tread "HOW" to spot the differences? I think there is some good info out there on how to I.D. Toranas but HQ-HZ is not mentioned so well, only the tags. What do we look out for..

I guess it all depends if you class the body as a spare part. They were available as replacement items back when the car was new. Insurance companies changed bodies all the time. Now that the new bodies are NLA, does this mean that you cant swap a body

maybe a body number "Blacklist" on this fastlane site somewhere would be a good start - whenever the plates are advertised the body number is stated and added to the list... This could be available for people for years if not decades to check on when buyi

The probelmn with that is the vast majority of rebodies were done years ago.
If you are going to spend $70k on a car pay an expert to look at it for you. Then if it has been rebodied they should find it.

Lads, my biggest fear is if these id's end up on someone's restored classic. this only encourages people to steal them how hard would it be to remove old id's and put on new ones.

I have heard stories of genuine resto'd SLR's being on show at a secured overnight public event with security, and come morning no ID plates ! NO comeback and no plates. Yes they get nicked for rebirthing.
And how many so-called genuine resto'd cars ar
