I always hear from older heads that the pre '76 186 was the 'best' red motor, although i've never really asked them why.
Is there any good reason why a the lower capacity version is 'better' that what appears to me to be the same engine with a longer stroke?

Some engines are better in some cars, and some engines have better bore to stroke ratios, some engines came out of the factory on spec.
Some people are old and forget how good it really was when they were young.

If that myth is true at all it will be based upon the stock engine. In modified form with good pistons, blue crank and rods you can't beat the 202. Cloudy is right about the LJ XU1, but remember it was closer to a 186 than most 202's as it used a 186 head |

Hi Spud.
You.ve actually asked 3 questions in one. The 1st one relates to why is a 186 head better than a 202 head. It's no better in performance or flow terms, but most mechanics & engine builders prefer the fully adjustable rocker gear of the 186. As |
If at first you don't succeed, just call it Version 1.0 |
