Hi, i've got a vh 253 with a mild cam that overheating. You go for a drive and after about 5 minutes the guage reads about half way, then it will go up to 3/4 then back down and keep doing this. Its just had a radiator clean(professionally), new thermostat and always has plenty of coolant. I was wondering how to check that my clutch fan, water pump and guage to ensure that they all work correctly? Thanks for any help.

Best way to tell if it's the gauge or not is when it says it's bloody hot open the bonnet and see if it is or not. You'll know coz the heat coming off the motor will be bloody hot, maybe bubbling from the radiator to the expansion tank, Steaming, pissing

These can also be symptoms of an airlock in your cooling system. Are you having to top-up the coolant regularly?

What you describe is exactly what happened when I put in an 88deg thermostat in my 253. Find one that opens lower. Simple fix.

Have you only just put the cam in? and then the over heating started once all back together?

Hi, the cam was put in before i brought the car, so all i know is that it has a "stage 2 cam" was unable to get any more details from the previous owner. I took it for another drive today, it got up to half way to 3/4 again got out when the guage read 3/4

hmmm...before you do that, get a good quality thermometer and measure the temp of your radiator water when the gauge is ½ and ¾ on the gauge...it may be your gauge and/or wiring playing up.
Cheers...Dave

Before you start pulling the car to bits. Ask yourself "what was the same before the fault and what is different since the fault". Check that first. The professional clean and the thermostat !
Use the same rule for all car faults ! in fact anything

I had the same thing on my HQ 253. I popped into a radiator place and they had a thermometer and he confirmed the temp was about right.
I got a new gauge (second hand)and now everthing is reading correctly.

The strap from the battery -ve terminal to the body is probably crook or missing. Replace that and the guage will probably read fine. If you just have the big lead from the battery to the engine the problem you are describing is common, as the current pat |
